Special Update on the Lower Lea Valley

I am delighted to introduce this special edition of Catalyst and its exclusive focus on LTGDC's work in delivering regeneration to the Lower Lea Valley.

With LTGDC now past the half way point of our indicative 10 year life it is genuinely exciting to see the conceptualising and planning for regeneration that marked our early life giving way to real delivery on the ground. There is an unstoppable momentum to our projects and activities that is transforming people and places while creating growth and capturing inward investment for east London.

From Hackney Wick to Stratford, Canning Town to Bromley by Bow our vision is for the renewal of the Lower Lea Valley as a mixed-use district of the highest quality, set within an unrivalled landscape of parkland and waterways anchored by the Olympic Park. Connecting local communities to major drivers of east London's economy, our Lower Lea Valley will combine leisure and recreational opportunities and together make a very special place.

This is a shared vision endorsed recently by Government. Responding to its review of LTGDC's activities over the last five years, it recognised the important role we will play in securing a long term legacy in east London after the London 2012 Olympic Games. We recognise this too and, going forward, the majority of new investments will be dedicated to this part of town.

I look forward to reporting back to you on future milestones achieved and the sure steps that we are taking to regenerate east London.

Works underway on Stratford High Street £10m improvements

Works are under way on the former Stratford Market Station building as part of the £10m improvement programme to breathe life into Stratford High Street. The historic building is a classic example of Victorian railway architecture and will once again become a focus for transport as the location for the new Stratford High Street DLR station, set to open in the autumn. Improvements are being made to open up the building and create an active frontage with wider pedestrian walkways.

Detailed designs have been completed for a new university in Stratford, a partnership project which brings together LTGDC, University of East London, Birkbeck College, HEFCE and Newham Council. Work starts on the next Stage D designs in July and the planning application will be submitted in August. The building is due to open in September 2013.
